What can a Sports Physiotherapist do?

After years of clients asking me the difference between regular physiotherapy and sports physiotherapy, i decided to put a small blog on it. there is quite a bit of difference in the working style of physios in sports. it may not involve usage of too many machines, and it may be all exercise, but let me give you an idea of various other branches of physiotherapy first!!

Physiotherapy has been divided into 5 different branches namely,

  1. MUSCULOSKELETAL PHYSIOTHERAPY
  2. NEURO PHYSIOTHERAPY
  3. CARDIORESPIRATORY PHYSIOTHERAPY
  4.  GERIATRIC PHYSIOTHERAPY
  5. SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY

So basically sports physio is one the branches of physiotherapy where in the physio’s are given specialized training in dealing with injuries occurring in various sports like Cricket, football, Tennis, badminton, Lawn tennis, swimming, Marathoners, boxers, and all different types of athletes.

What does a sports physiotherapist’s do differently than a regular physio?

Sports injuries are high performance injuries which require utmost care.A Sports physiotherapist work closely with the athlete/ team to identify the requirements of a particular sport and  bring out the best result post injury  in performance. For instance, if a midfield footballer injures his ankle while playing football and goes through the rehab. He is given specialized rehab exercises to be able to run, cut directions and manipulate the ball like before the injury as per his sport. Depending on the sport a custmoised rehab program is designed to assist the athlete back to the sport. if its a cricket injury like hyperxtension in a fast bowler, then the bowler is guided to exercises which prevent hyperextension or stabilize the spine and assist in his return to cricket

how do sports physical therapist help in preventing injuries?

Sports physical therapists play a critical role in preventing injuries by working with athletes to improve their strength, flexibility, balance, and overall physical fitness. Here are a few ways they can help:

  1. Pre-participation screening: Before an athlete starts a new sport or training program, a physical therapist can perform a pre-participation screening to identify any physical limitations or imbalances that may put the athlete at risk for injury. Based on the results, the therapist can create an individualized exercise program to address any issues and prevent injuries.

  2. Injury prevention programs: Physical therapists can design injury prevention programs tailored to an athlete’s specific needs and sport. These programs may include exercises to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and proprioception, as well as techniques for proper warm-up and cool-down.

  3. Education: Physical therapists can educate athletes on proper technique and form for their sport, as well as the importance of rest and recovery. They can also provide guidance on proper nutrition and hydration to support optimal physical performance.

  4. Monitoring and feedback: Physical therapists can monitor an athlete’s progress and provide feedback on their technique and progress. This can help prevent injuries by catching any potential issues early and making adjustments to the athlete’s training program as needed.

Overall, sports physical therapists play a crucial role in helping athletes prevent injuries and achieve their full physical potential
